Cheating

OK, so it's kind of cheating, but here is a link to a great article about the need to keep your brain engaged, even if you retire. William Safire (OK, maybe he's not your favorite, but you must admit he knows language), wrote it-his last column as he himself retires to take up a new challenge. Check it out here:

John,

I have enjoyed writing peoms, taking notes and jotting down thoughts in a diary for most of my life. I have coil notebooks full of my scribblings. And yet I never considered myself a writer. In November of last year ~ that's only three months ago ~ I started the blog and within the week I realized I have an overwhelming passion for writing short stories.

As I have set out to learn the craft, I am starting to see the difference in writing and writing well. You write well. But yet, I can't quite put my finger on what the magic is exactly, so that I may apply it to my own writing, and so I am still just a baby learning to walk.
